Mogli

Strenuous work, lifting heavy loads and being severely beaten were my lot in life, till I was saved and brought to the SPCA stables. The SPCA team took loving care of me and today I am healthy, my weight is normal and all I found a loving adoptive home

Mogli, a 9 year old horse, reached the SPCA stables after a long period of forced labor. He was found harnessed to a wagon loaded with iron in South Tel Aviv, in poor condition, hungry and wounded.

There were cuts on his body, apparently caused by the iron bars and the harnessing that was unprofessionally fitted, his legs were swollen from the strenuous work, his hooves were neglected and had not been trimmed for a long time.

On veterinary recommendation, Mogli was given a long period of recuperation, his wounds were tended and he was provided with special food. When his hooves grew he was given professional hoof-trimming, and he was also neutered and given all the required vaccinations.

Mogli has reached standard weight, his state of health improved and after a long process of rehabilitation we found for him an adoptive home.

Maria

Having suffering terrible abuse and when I could no longer work, I was abandoned and left in dreadful pain. Fortunately I was brought to the SPCA Horses' Guest House, where I was treated devotedly and underwent a long process of rehabilitation. Today the pain and hard work are merely a distant memory

Maria, 8 year old horse,  was found roaming in South Tel Aviv, apparently after her owners had abused her over a long period of time. They had deprived her of food and left her to her fate when her strength gave out and she could no longer work. Maria was emaciated and in very bad condition. She was dehydrated and battered all over her body. A veterinarian specialist who was called to the Society determined that she was totally exhausted, suffering from malnutrition and wounds in her rib area and on both her sides. In the neck area she had infected open wounds and one of her legs was extremely swollen.

Maria was given intensive care for a long time and her sores were drained and disinfected. Special food with vitamin supplements brought about a consistent weight gain, and when her pain decreased, she became more relaxed and calm. Later on Maria was given deworming treatment, teeth filing and hoof trimming.

After a long process of rehabilitation, we found for Maria a farm, and today she lives happily  in good conditions (main photo).

Oliver

If you had seen me when I first got here, you wouldn't believe your eyes today. I was a scared, young and obstinate foal suffering from malnutrition and unable to trust anyone. Madonna adopted and nursed me and slowly but surely I managed to gain weight Today I am a healthy and friendly horse

Oliver, 1.5 year old foal, was found wandering around the Um el Fahum area in a state of dehydration and suffering from acute malnutrition. Oliver’s rehabilitation in the Society stables, that included primarily providing nutritional supplements and a lot of love, took a very long time because most of the time he refused to eat and didn’t allow anyone to come near him. Those who helped him were his fellow horses, especially Madonna, a mature mare who adopted him and even nursed him; her young foal, Justin and another foal called Brigitte.

After many long months of rehabilitation Oliver was declared a success story. From an emaciated foal, sick and frightened to death he was transformed into a handsome horse, both sociable and confident. Today he has reached his correct weight and lives a happy and healthy life in the Society’s Guest House for Horses.

Shula

After 18 years of back-breaking toil I have finally come out of slavery to freedom and have reached a safe haven, just before Passover. The SPCA team accepted me to the Horses' Guest House, immediately began to treat me and gave me the name Shula

Shula, a lovely eighteen-year-old mare, was found wandering on the streets and brought to the Society in a state of total exhaustion.

A veterinary examination revealed that Shula was in very bad physical condition: she was suffering from malnutrition and had a neglected sore eye that had become severely infected.

She underwent surgery to remove the eye and is now on an intense course of antibiotics and analgesics. She is given special food; a nourishing mixture specifically for horses that will bring her up to her correct weight within a few months.

Three in One Yard

Another rescue: Two horses and one donkey that had been neglected over a long period of time will undergo rehabilitation in the SPCA

Last Friday afternoon, a police officer called the SPCA. During his patrol in South Tel Aviv he noticed an injured donkey roaming around, limping, apparently after being involved in an accident. The policeman followed the young donkey that went into a private yard and discovered that there were other animals there: Two horses in barred cages and two dogs tied upwith metal chains – all emaciated and neglected. The SPCA rescue team quickly set out for the address given them by the police officer where some more policemen had already gathered.

According to Danielle Reches, a SPCA volunteer: “When we reached the site we found two emaciated and neglected horses who were locked into tiny cages full of iron bars and without food. The place was dirty and the horses appeared to be hungry and exhausted, with both of them having very long hooves that hadn’t been tended for a long time. The donkey, a young foal, lay in one of the stalls, his body covered in sores. We were glad to see that he could get up on his legs and walk”.

Once the policemen decided to confiscate all the animals in the yard, and when there was no appropriate response from the call center in the Central Unit for Enforcement and Investigations (formerly the Supervision of Flora and Fauna) of the Ministry of Agriculture, the horses and the foal were taken to the SPCA stables where they will undergo a long period of rehabilitation. The two dogs of dangerous breed were taken to the Veterinary Department of the Tel Aviv Municipality

While the staff prepared special stalls for the horses and donkey, the animals were let out in the SPCA yard that had been strewn with grass and they ate as though they had never before seen food. The three year old mare and seven year old horse, that were named Chrissy and Jack, have been put on a specially nutritious diet that will help them gain weight. In the next little while they will get shots against tetanus, rabies, flu/herpes, Nile Fever and deworming and will undergo professional treatment for their hooves. The three month old donkey, who was named Stanley, is suffering from lashes and superficial wounds as well as an open wound on his leg. He is being treated with washes, disinfectants and special ointments and needs shots against tetanus, rabies and deworming. When they get a bit stronger, the two males will be neutered.

Daud

I was saved thanks to the determination of the SPCA staff, who chased after me for five hours until the authorities arrived. Once I was rescued from my abusive owners and brought to the Society's stables, I underwent rehabilitation and today I am ready to go to a new home

Following a report lodged at the SPCA call center about a horse harnessed to a wagon loaded with iron, SPCA representatives chased after the horse while the authorities – the Tel Aviv municipality and the police – chose to ignore the incident. Only after five hours of chasing the horse all over the city, the authorities’ representatives arrived and confiscated the horse who had suffered at the hands of its abusive owners.

When poor Daud reached the Society, veterinary examination revealed that he was undernourished and suffering from sores caused by the way he had been tied to the wagon and the severe whip lashes that he incurred. The heavy loads that he pulled over a long period of time had caused serious damage to his legs, particularly the hind legs, which were found to have infections and edema. In addition, damage was found in the muscles which caused instability, his shoes had been neglected for a long time and his hooves were in need of extensive treatment.

Daud underwent extensive rehabilitation, was neutered, gained weight – thanks to the high quality food he was given – his wounds healed and his teeth were filed. There is still some swelling in the fetlock area, and so he is not fit for intensive riding.

Pinocchio

I was attacked by dogs and was in a terrible state: the bites around my nose made it difficult to breathe and once I was brought to the SPCA stables I had emergency surgery. They took care of me lovingly for three months and today I am a happy and healthy donkey

The 2 year old cute donkey, Pinocchio, was found in the Mateh Benyamin area suffering from deep wounds on his nose, lower jaw and hind-quarters, apparently caused by dog bites. In a report written by the veterinarian after examining Pinocchio, it is written: “The donkey is suffering from deep cuts in the nostril and sinus areas that match dog bites. The deep cuts reach the frontal sinus area, preventing the donkey from breathing fully and correctly, the nostrils are blocked due to the collapse of the sinuses and parts of the sinuses that are blocking the lower section of the nostrils”.

The rehabilitation process that Pinocchio went through included surgery in the nostril area that relieved his breathing, His wounds were treated with antibiotics, analgesics and disinfecting washes.

Arif

After my last owners abandoned me I wandered around, a bit confused, until they brought me to the Horses' Home. The other horses welcomed me and my caregivers say that I have a long period of rehabilitation in front of me but that afterwards they will find me a new home

Arif got his name because he was found wandering in the Moshav Beit Arif area, in the agricultural fields, on the roads and around the residential area of the Moshav.

On his arrival at the Society’s stables, he underwent veterinary examination which determined that he was underweight, in need of hoof trimming and anti-worm treatment and was suffering from wounds in his hind legs, apparently from being tied up in an unfit manner.

Oren

I reached the SPCA stables wounded and worn-out after some heartless youths abused me. I was looked after and treated well for a few months, gained weight and my sores healed, and now I am living in a safe farm that adopted me

Following a police report of a poor donkey being ridden by two youths who were beating him up in the Oranit area, and after all the parties to whom the police officer had approached had turned their back on him (including the person responsible in the Ministry of Agriculture), a SPCA team set out to the location. The poor, exhausted 3 year old donkey, that was named Oren, was taken in a special wagon to the SPCA stables in a state of exhaustion.

A veterinary examination revealed that Oren was not only very thin but that he was suffering from sores on his back and chest areas, indicating that in addition to being beaten, he was harnessed to a wagon and forced to pull heavy loads.

Hamsa’s Rehabilitation

After collapsing and being unable to stand, Hamsa will undergo rehabilitation in the SPCA

Following a report from passers-by about a horse in distress in the vicinity of Taibe, the Society immediately sent out a special team to the location. They discovered a poor seven-year-old horse, wounded and emaciated, who had collapsed from exhaustion and could not get back up on her feet. With the help of others in the area, the team managed to lift her on to the trailer and take her to the Society’s Horses’ Home.

The horse, that was named Hamsa, underwent veterinarian examination, which established that she was suffering from a serious open wound on her back, apparently caused by misuse of her saddle. The examination also revealed that she was dehydrated, malnourished, in need of hoof trimming after a long period of neglect, and needed to have her teeth filed.

Hamsa has been put on a special diet with expensive supplements to help her gain weight. In the first couple of days she still found it difficult to stand, and now she appears to be getting stronger. She has been administered antibiotics and analgesics for her sores and when she recovers, her teeth will be filed and she will get special care for her hooves.

It is anticipated that Hamsa’s recuperation period will be long, involving thousands of NIS in expenses. We request the public’s help in Hamsa’s recuperation by contributions and ask that any instances of animals in distress be reported to us.
